The strength of a university depends on its ability to select and recruit students on the grounds of ability, dedication, and promise—not their financial circumstances. I am deeply grateful to the many donors whose endowment gifts helped Duke create opportunities for students with financial need. We could not have introduced these changes without the confidence that we will reach—and, I hope, surpass— our $300 million goal. Thank you for recognizing the great value of financial aid endowment.
