Nicholas School of the Environment
Giving in 2008-09
The Nicholas School of the Environment received support for internships, graduate fellowships, and student research and field trips. Annual Fund dollars were directed to these priorities as well. The Duke Marine Laboratory in Beaufort, NC, benefited from significant funding for research and instruction, and the school received support for a research partnership with the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center examining how environmental toxins and pollutants affect human health. The school's enrollment in the Master of Environmental Management Program for 2009-10 grew by 40 percent, and financial aid for graduate students remains a fund-raising priority.

- Funds for a new LEED-certified classroom and administrative building
- Financial aid and operating funds for the new International Master of Environmental Management Program
- Support for the Duke Leaf Award (Lifetime Environmental Achievement in the Fine Arts)
- Funds to hire new faculty to support the Duke Water Initiative

- Alice and Fred Stanback donated an additional $2 million in December 2008 to the Nicholas School and the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, continuing their support of a collaborative research initiative between the two institutions. Read More

- Dean of the Nicholas School Bill Chameides comments on a recent lecture by Amory Lovins, chairman and chief scientist of the Rocky Mountain Institute, in The Green Grok.
