Jordan Yoder is a biomedical engineering major, pursing a minor in chemistry and a certificate in global health. Last summer, he participated in DukeEngage, which provides funding for students to pursue immersive service-learning opportunities. He and another student traveled to a Nicaraguan hospital, where they helped repair medical equipment. As a senior, he's enrolled in a design course where students design devices for people with disabilities. He's already been accepted to six medical schools.
Jordan attended public school in a small town in Indiana, and he comes from a family of limited means. A longtime Blue Devils fan, he excelled in math and science and was drawn to the Pratt School of Engineering's strong reputation. For him, like many students, "Getting accepted was great, but the day I received the financial aid letter was far more exciting."
Duke's commitment to financial aid enables talented students like Jordan to make contributions in and out of the classroom; but, he notes, it benefits non-aid recipients as well. "Financial aid brings a diversity of perspectives to Duke. I grew up raising animals on a farm. A person like me wouldn't be here without financial aid."
