Junior Eric Mastrolonardo shared what Annual Fund gifts have made possible:
Coming to Duke University has been transformative for me, and I know that Annual Fund contributors like you are responsible for many of the extraordinary opportunities I have enjoyed here.
As a scholarship recipient who has benefitted directly from Annual Fund donations, I can honestly say: Without your support, I would not have been able to come to Duke. Thank you!
Annual Fund gifts also support student activities that have helped me broaden my horizons and forge lasting friendships. For instance, the Duke Martial Arts Club I co-lead has been able to travel to the national collegiate championships and other competitions. (I won a national medal in Taekwondo my freshman year!) And last year several classmates and I had the chance to travel to China to introduce middle-school students to a variety of art forms. Teaching them Taekwondo was an unforgettable experience.
As a pre-med biology major, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a biology lab here at Duke. I’ve actually been quite surprised by how much I enjoy doing research, and by the tremendous range of projects taking place on this campus. I know that Annual Fund dollars help support faculty-mentored student research like mine, and I am grateful for this chance to learn a new way of thinking.
With these experiences as a foundation, I’m excited about what the future holds. Medical school is definitely on the horizon, although my new-found love of research could also come into play. Whatever path I choose, I know that Duke is equipping me to excel.
Thank you for making these life-changing opportunities possible – for me, and for all of the other Duke students who benefit daily from your generosity and your willingness to invest in our lives. I plan to pay it forward when I am a Duke alumnus.
