Who modeled philanthropy for you?
Early in my career, after being at Deloitte only a few years, I began to realize that being involved in the local community was an important part of building a professional network. So I joined the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, which awards grants to local nonprofit organizations. It gave me a great bird’s eye view of how philanthropy works and introduced me to people who taught me the impact philanthropy can have on a community.
How do you view the connection between volunteer service and financial support of an organization?
I look for organizations and causes that relate to my passions and where I’m able to help get things accomplished. I wouldn’t want to be involved in an organization that I wasn’t also supporting financially, and I don’t think I’d give substantial support to an organization if I didn’t have a level of involvement with it. That would feel incomplete.
What donor experience has given you the most joy?
Late in 2013, Brad and I began thinking about a major gift to Duke. Both of our sons had started there in the fall of 2013—one in school and one working—coincident with the Duke Forward campaign. We knew that the next few years would be special with both of them there. Brad and I share values but we have different interests. Ultimately, we pledged a multi-year gift that would support our varied interests and span the time both our sons would be at Duke. Being able to spread our gift across areas that mattered to each of us was the best!
What is your greatest hope for Duke?
That it becomes known for producing alumni who are the most amazingly diverse contributors to improving the world!
